Their talk, “Sales Tax Treatment of Direct Mail” opened with a high-level overview of sales tax and use tax and the states that are currently auditing direct mail producers and their customers.

They then offered an in-depth primer on essential concepts concerning taxability—with examples of specific state laws, from New York to Florida, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. The presentation offered guidance on the taxability of postage, shipping, and other mailing services, such as digital ads. Marty and Jamie concluded the presentation with a practical session on how to develop clear action plans for printers and publishers.
