Life at B&I

As a small boutique firm, we take pride in our collaborative environment, one that fosters deep relationships with each other and our clients built on trust, integrity, and a commitment to service.

Because of our size, all of our lawyers enjoy substantial client interaction, work closely with colleagues on small teams, and have frequent opportunities to take on leadership roles. To foster collaboration and the development of highly creative and strategic solutions for our clients, we offer flexible work arrangements and an “open door” policy.

Life in Maine

Maine is one of the most pristine environments in the United States and Portland is regularly voted one of the country’s “most livable cities”.

Set against this backdrop, Brann & Isaacson offers its lawyers challenging work, sterling clients, and a small firm setting. In other words, we offer the best of both worlds—a sophisticated national practice within the confines of an intimate and familiar working environment.

Because of Maine’s size and our reputation, B&I lawyers can, and do, become involved in government and charitable organizations at both a local and state level. Outside the office, our lawyers find time to be jazz musicians, blacksmiths, screenwriters, college and law school professors, and community leaders. And, of course, our lawyers take advantage of Maine’s quality of life and natural beauty, which make it the perfect setting to build a professional and personal career.

Open Positions

Brann & Isaacson seeks an attorney with three to five years of litigation experience to join its statewide and national litigation practice. The firm is located in Maine, and not only represents businesses, individuals, and government in Maine, but also handles matters throughout the country for internet and brick-and-mortar retailers and other companies, including a dozen of the 100 largest internet retailers in America. The firm has litigated in administrative agencies and state and federal courts up to and including the U.S. Supreme Court.

Brann & Isaacson, an established mid-size law firm with offices in Lewiston and Portland, is looking for a creative, personable, and self-motivated attorney to join our robust trusts and estates practice group. We provide sophisticated estate planning and administration services to individuals and families throughout Maine and have an excellent reputation for high quality work. We are looking for a talented attorney who wants to play a key role in our client-focused practice.

Brann & Isaacson is seeking a tax paralegal to provide full-time analytical support for its state and local tax practice, and to potentially assist other corporate practice areas as needed. We are a thriving and growing practice looking to add critical support to our team so that we are better able to serve our client’s needs. Brann & Isaacson represents businesses located throughout the world in state and local tax and escheat matters in the United States. This position offers the unique opportunity to work on sophisticated local, state and national tax matters.

Responsibilities vary day to day, but include assisting attorneys in defending audits; state and local tax law research; data collection and analysis for state and local tax audits, as well as drafting responses to audit information requests; interviews of clients and interactions with clients’ accounting/tax and finance departments; and communication with state and local tax departments.

Summer Associate Program

We offer a Summer Associate Program designed to immerse two or three highly qualified, first or second year law students in the breadth and scope of the firm’s practice. Summer associates work directly with partners and associates on varying legal issues for the firm’s national client base.

We make our summer program both a learning and hands-on working experience. While legal research and writing are critical components, summer associates also participate in client meetings and strategy conferences, and attend hearings, trials, and depositions.

By the time the program ends, our summer associates know what it means to be a lawyer at Brann & Isaacson. Although the focus is on work, we also host a variety of social activities, such as dinners, local theater outings, baseball games, firm functions, and informal gatherings.
