B&I University: AI and the Hidden IP Risks You Need to Know
As retailers increasingly use AI tools to enhance and inform operations, they must understand the legal framework governing their deployment to protect their brands.
On May 20, Stacy Stitham, Managing Partner at B&I, and Partner Kevin Haley presented a B&I University webinar on AI and the Hidden IP Risks You Need to Know.
In the presentation, they explored the critical intersection of:
- Intellectual property ownership
- Potential privacy pitfalls
- The evolving landscape of AI-specific contractual agreements
The webinar concluded with general risk mitigation strategies that businesses can implement, such as:
- Audit your company’s current AI uses to ensure you understand which tools every department is using
- Develop AI content usage policies and guidelines—stating how employees can and should use AI tools, and what content or usage requires additional review
- Review insurance coverage to see if it covers AI-related liability
- Understand the pool of information from which AI trains/sources content
- Gain consent for privately-owned data
- Screen for contamination by copyrighted data
As businesses continue to integrate AI into everyday operations, understanding the legal and intellectual property implications has become increasingly important. B&I’s Intellectual Property team advises companies, from start-ups to brand-name companies with large trademark and copyright portfolios, on the proper care of their intellectual property.
