Jamie Szal

Jamie Szal is a partner at Brann & Isaacson. Jamie assists businesses in all aspects of state and local tax controversy, from regulatory and administrative proceedings through civil litigation. In the wake of the 2018 U.S. Supreme Court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, in which Jamie worked on the team that represented Wayfair, she works with retailers, technology and telecommunications companies, and digital service providers of all sizes to strategize multistate state and local tax compliance. Jamie also aids companies with corporate compliance and governance matters.

Prior to B&I, Jamie spent several years at the Massachusetts Department of Revenue as counsel in the Litigation Bureau and Office of Appeals. She earned her LL.M. in Taxation and Certificate in State and Local Taxation, both with distinction, from Georgetown University Law Center.

Jamie is an active volunteer for her alma mater, Trinity College. She is currently a Trustee of the college and serves on Trinity’s Women’s Leadership Council. Jamie has also served multiple officer roles with the college’s alumni association Executive Committee, and as an alumni mentor and admissions volunteer. Jamie is the President of the Board of Directors of Community Dental, a non-profit dental organization focused on making superior quality dental services available to all Mainers, especially those in need. Finally, Jamie serves on the Board of Directors and Programming Committee MothersEsquire, where she is involved in its #PumpUptheBar campaign and manages its partnership with the legal blog Above the Law.

Outside of work, Jamie enjoys raising her fiercely independent, impish daughters; singing (when we’re not dealing with an airborne pathogen, of course); exploring Maine and its many hiking trails with her husband, daughters, and dogs; and attempting to reclaim some lost flexibility with an irregular yoga practice.

Jamie is active on LinkedIn. She starts her week with a reflection on gratitude. Her posts also probe varying aspects of state and local tax as well as privacy law, as well as sharing her perspectives on life as a full-time #lawmom.
